Is Reddit Still Worth It for AI Search? It Depends Which Engine

It depends entirely on which engine you mean. New data on how often AI answers link to Reddit shows ChatGPT citing it far less than it used to. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode still lean on it heavily. Treat "be active on Reddit" as one engine's strategy, not all of them.

How does Reddit's share vary by engine?

Dageno, an AI-citation monitoring vendor, tracked what share of source-linked AI answers carried a Reddit URL in September 2026:

  • Google AI Overviews: 38.6%
  • Google AI Mode: 27.7%
  • Perplexity: 8.5%
  • Gemini: 5.6%
  • Grok: 1.7%
  • ChatGPT: 1.4%

Google's two surfaces lean on Reddit the most. ChatGPT and Grok barely touch it now.

Has ChatGPT's reliance on Reddit really collapsed?

Over the longer stretch of the year, yes. Dageno's figure for ChatGPT was 34.8% in February 2026, falling to about 1.4% by September. Grok fell even further: from 79.5% in February to 1.7% in September.

A separate, narrower comparison in the same report looked at a specific date, August 14, 2026, in a US-labeled slice of the data: Reddit URLs in ChatGPT answers went from 12.8% in the six days before to 2.3% in the seven days after, a relative drop of roughly 82% in two weeks. Over that same narrow window, the share of ChatGPT sources that were brand-owned websites held close to steady, 86.5% to 87.5%. These are two different measurement windows in the same report, not one continuous trend, so we're keeping them separate rather than averaging them.

What about Google?

Google's AI Overviews varied a lot by topic, not just by month: 50.3% of answers in a web-scraping and data-extraction question set carried a Reddit link, against 10.1% for a customer-communication and social-CRM set. AI Mode's Reddit-linked share ranged roughly 22% to 40% across the markets Dageno checked.

Dageno also estimates that around 90% of AI Mode answers that link to Reddit show evidence the answer text actually drew on Reddit content, not just that a link was attached. That figure relies on Dageno's own classification method, which we can't independently verify.

Can this be checked at the source?

Only partly. Tech Times credits a "Dageno Reddit Source and Adoption Trends Study (October 2026)" for these numbers, but we could not find that report, or any per-engine Reddit breakdown, published anywhere on Dageno's own site: not on its homepage, its blog, its research library, or its citation-analysis product page. Dageno's site does show an all-engines-combined Reddit citation count, but no per-engine figures and no comparison across months. So these numbers come from Tech Times' account of Dageno's data, which is a secondary report, not something we could confirm on the primary source directly.

What doesn't this data show?

  • Sample size undisclosed: Dageno doesn't state how many answers or prompts sit behind each percentage.
  • Question sets: not described as randomly chosen.
  • A link isn't proof of influence: a Reddit URL appearing among an answer's sources doesn't, by itself, show it shaped the text. Dageno's own ~90% figure on this is based on its own method.
  • One source: we found no second vendor's numbers to cross-check these against.
  • No engagement data: nothing here says whether readers acted on an answer, only which sources it cited.

What should a B2B brand do with this?

  1. Don't run one AI-search playbook for every engine. A Reddit push moves the needle far more on Google's AI surfaces than on ChatGPT or Grok right now.
  2. Check where your own buyers actually ask. The engine mix your prospects use matters more than any single source tactic.
  3. Keep building a page you control. It holds up regardless of which third-party source an engine happens to favor this month.
  4. Recheck in a few months. Dageno's own numbers show these shares can move by dozens of points within weeks.
